It was a bit of a chilly day on 9 April 1860. The roundhouse was light on duty as the crew awaited the next run between Dayton and Springfield. So, they worked up a game of base ball to pass the time. The Old Man Mac) served as umpire while a dozen or so locals observed as audience either directly near the field or in heated carriages.


After nine innings of play, the Lake Erie squad under Passenger had the best of the Mad River squad under Coltrane following a blessing of the field by Sire, a raising of the colors of our nation by Black Snake, and a reading of "The Defence of Fort McHenry" by Ballast Scorcher.
